Angelina, the tearoom and pâtisserie from Paris known for its delicatessen and rich heritage, has finally reached Singapore shores. One of my girl friends suggested this new establishment for lunch and it was my first time setting foot in the new Capitol building after its re-opening. Construction was still ongoing and not all were opened for business just yet but the Capitol Piazza sure looked set to be the a foodie draw given its good location, direct access to the MRT and exciting line-up of eateries.
Back to Angelina…
If not for the constantly loud drilling noise from the construction that totally disrupt the otherwise perfect ambience for girls’ catch-ups over tea, the dainty decor as well as the patisserie shop concept could easily make one feel like being transported to Paris.
For some reason, we all went for the main courses instead of the brunch items.
Their two signature items – African Hot Chocolate and The Mont-Blanc fell short of expectations.
To give this wholesome looking hot chocolate some credit, my first sip really sent me going: “Yumz, this must be the best hot chocolate ever!” Its rich flavour really wowed me. However, after subsequent sips, we realised it was simply too thick to be enjoyed as a beverage. I then started adding milk to dilute mine but we still couldn’t finish this little jug between two people. One of us ordered the iced version earlier on and the waiter explained that it would be more diluted than its original version. While I myself did not have a chance to try that, I believed it to be a preferred option for me. A good tip to enjoy this is probably to order one to be shared among four people, just to have a taste of it (and maybe some milk might do the trick).
This Angelina’s trademark pastry might have been famously so but it failed to tantalise like how a great dessert is supposed to towards the end of a meal. To me, it was just a over-the-top sweet and the meringue at the bottom did nothing to give the sweet a good balance of the taste buds. Again, perhaps something that can be shared among 3-4 people. Unless of course you are a natural fan of Mont Blancs and have been dying to have one.
The one thing that needed much boost would be the service. While the staff was friendly, efficiency was nowhere in sight (perhaps due to the relatively new operation). We just couldn’t figure out why it took 3 chasers and more than 15 min just to bring over the above two pastries from the display shelf next door.
Will I be back? Most likely as I would like to try the other items on the menu and on display but definitely after the construction work has completely wrapped up and hopefully by then, service will be ramped up. The place is kind of tiny and confined so I would not recommend it for a large group but more for a quiet afternoon tea with a couple of girlfriends.
